Collection: SPARTAN GIRLS

The Spartan Girls Athletic Club was organized in Brooklyn in 1910, and its women’s basketball team, known as the Spartan Girls, were the original sister team to the Smart Set Athletic Club, an African-American social and athletic organization.

The Spartan Girls played their home games at Avon Hall in what is now Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, the 71st Regiment Armory on Park Avenue in Manhattan, and at the Manhattan Casino in Harlem, with music by the J. Nimrod Jones Orchestra during halftimes and afterward.

The Spartan Athletic Club basketball team, circa 1911, known as the Spartan Girls, was the sister squad of the Smart Set Athletic Club of Brooklyn.
